We appreciate your ongoing support of Volusia County Schools. In addition to serving an amazing community, I have the privilege of collaborating with compassionate leaders and brilliant staff members who work tirelessly to help our students grow into kind, thoughtful and curious individuals.
Spring is such a busy time in which we celebrate our students and staff who are extraordinary members of our community. We recently kicked off our new monthly “Great People, Great Deeds” and “Schools of Character” campaigns. The “Great People, Great Deeds” campaign honors two staff members who have gone above and beyond the call of duty. The “Schools of Character” campaign honors one student or staff member with a themed character trait. At recent board meetings, we showcased the kindness and outstanding citizenship of our students and staff members. In April, we celebrate individuals who exhibit self-control. It is such a pleasure to share the significant impact that these individuals have on our students and community. It is important to us to integrate positive character education into our rich academic learning programs.
Enhancing our spring academic programs, our schools also celebrated Women’s History Month, which focuses on the contributions women have made throughout history and reminds us to express gratitude for the influential women in our lives who inspire us every day and strive for a better tomorrow. My Superintendent’s Reading Challenge and national “Read Across America” programs included many enriching reading activities such as tracking student reading, listening to guest readers, and creating bookmarks. Activities like these emphasize the joy of reading and encourage our students to become life-long readers.
With only a couple of months remaining in this school year, we look forward to many end-of-year activities. Students are finishing academic projects and assignments, competing in final athletic programs, performing in school plays, enjoying educational field trips and participating in choral and band spring concerts. I am incredibly grateful to our community for their ongoing support of our schools. We see you in our classrooms. We see you leading field trips. We see you assisting in our academic, athletic, music and vocational programs. We appreciate your time, your generosity and your ongoing support as we work together to provide a whole child education experience that is grounded in strong character education and committed to academic excellence for all our students.
