It’s December, and the holidays are in full swing.
Calendars are packed with gatherings, festive dinners are being planned and holiday shopping is underway. The air is crisp and alive with the sounds of the season.
“Holiday music is part of what makes this time of year so special," said Amelia W. Fulmer, director of the Fitzgerald Performing Arts Center at Flagler Auditorium and a passionate advocate for arts and arts education in the region. “It reflects tradition, growth and connection across generations.”
At the arts center, concerts throughout the month celebrate the magic of holiday music.
“Holiday music is like a favorite ornament—carefully brought out year after year. Its familiar melodies and lyrics instantly evoke warmth and nostalgia. For families with children involved in the arts, these songs carry a deeper meaning, reflecting not only the season’s joy but also the growth and development of their young musicians.”
Holiday concerts and performances become milestones, offering families a chance to pause and witness their children’s progress.
“Holiday music doesn’t just celebrate the season—it strengthens bonds within families and brings joy to the community,” Fulmer explained.
“Music has the unique ability to bring people together. School auditoriums, church halls and community centers fill with families and neighbors, all united in appreciation for the talents of our youth,” she said.
“These events remind us that the arts are not just about entertainment—they are a vital part of our shared humanity. They teach our children confidence, creativity and teamwork while giving us all a reason to celebrate the beauty of the season.”
“For children involved in the arts, every holiday season brings new challenges and opportunities,” Fulmer said. Each year, they tackle more complex pieces, develop their skills and deepen their love for music. Parents see this growth firsthand and recognize that the lessons learned—discipline, dedication and self-expression—are gifts that will last a lifetime.
"As we celebrate this holiday season, let us take a moment to appreciate the role music plays in our lives,” Fulmer said.
“It’s more than just background noise—it’s a bridge that connects us, a tradition that grows richer with time and a source of joy that sustains us year after year. By supporting the arts in our schools and communities, we ensure that this precious gift continues to thrive, inspiring generations to come.”
Fulmer encourages families to attend a school concert, a community caroling event or to simply enjoy an evening at home singing familiar tunes.
“Let the music of the holidays remind us of what truly matters: love, connection and the beauty of watching our children grow into their fullest potential.”
