This month, we take time to celebrate the many accomplishments of our students while looking forward to graduation ceremonies in May. I enjoy this time of year, seeing the outcome of the hard work and dedication of our teachers, administrators and staff reflected in the lives of our students.
As an organization, we are proud to honor students for their high academic achievements. We also take time to honor and celebrate students of good character. We have two upcoming events recognizing our outstanding juniors and seniors.
On April 13, the district is proud to celebrate over 100 seniors graduating in the top 3% of their class at the annual STAR event. STAR stands for Students Taking Academic Responsibility, and each student selects a teacher-mentor who has inspired them throughout their academic career. In addition, students get a medal and certificate for their academic achievements. I am proud to honor these high-performing students. With their work ethic and dedication to excellence, I know they will be successful as they move on to their next phase in life.
More than 100 students will be recognized this year for their exemplary character at the annual American Youth Character Awards banquet on April 25. These awards recognize students for serving as good role models for their peers. Nominees are evaluated based on the influence of The Six Pillars – Trustworthiness, Respect, Responsibility, Fairness, Caring and Citizenship – in their lives, especially as they relate to overcoming obstacles, making difficult choices, generosity, self-sacrifice and community service. All honorees will receive a certificate and lapel pin. In addition, seniors will receive a medal and a $500 award. Eight additional seniors and one junior will also be honored as Pursuing Victory With Honor nominees for displaying the Six Pillars of Character on the athletic field. The overall winner receives a $1,000 award.
I want to congratulate all these students on their achievements and their families, mentors and community that have supported them throughout their high school years.
April is National Volunteer Month, and I thank all our volunteers who have selflessly supported the SJCSD. The resolve of our volunteers to continue making a difference by providing services such as early literacy, tutoring and mentoring to our students is paramount to our success.
